Who Was The Tylenol Killer?

I have shown that Kaczynski was known by his criminal signature of using victims, streets, cities and other clues pertaining to themes of Nature, in particular Water, Mountains, Trees and (most of all) Wood. I have also shown that it seems the Tylenol Killer of 1982 and 1986 had a similar criminal signature, as he also targeted victims, streets, and stores with identical Nature themes of Water, Mountains, Trees and Wood. Knowing that Kaczynski is a suspect for being the Zodiac Killer, let us look at that case for a similar criminal signature.

Probable and definite Zodiac crimes took place at RIVERside, Blue Rock SPRINGS, LAKE Herman Road, LAKE Berryessa, South LAKE Tahoe.

Zodiac told cab driver Paul Stine to go to Washington and MAPLE street, it is MAPLE street Z refers to in his letter claiming credit for the murder and crime actually took place closest to CHERRY street.

SFPD Officer Richard Radetich, 6/19/70, possible Z victim, was murdered on Waller street, but a white American car is seen speeding away on nearby OAK street.

Stuart Maher, 3/17/68, a possible Z victim, was shot in the back of the head in San Fransisco on PINE street.

Pat Tan, 4/19/70, possible Z victim, found hanging from a TREE on Mt. Tam.

Isobel Watson, 4/7/72, a possible Z victim, was stabbed in the Tamalpais Valley area on PINE HILL Road.

Yvonne Weber (13 years old) and Maureen Sterling (12 years old), 2/4/72, possible Z victims in Sonoma County, last seen alive at the REDWOOD Ice Rink.

Barbara Jane Perkins, 12/8/67, possible Z victim, a nurse who lived on Grant street in Berkeley, 1.4 miles from TJK residence on Regent street, found at Point Reyes National SEASHORE, head was "tucked against base of fallen TREE."

Daniel Williams, possible Z victim, lived on BUSH street in Martinez, reported calls from man claiming to be Z and arsenic poison later put into a soda pop bottle.

Unknown female U Cal Riverside student, late 1966, possible Z victim, accepted ride from man matching Z description, man said "after all I'm not Jack the Ripper," spoke of Cheri Jo Bates death, told woman "I'm not going to kill you. If I wanted to kill you I could just hit you in the head with this piece of WOOD." Attacked the student, who then escaped.

Z sent card with "peek through the PINES" on it, card hinted a body could be found "around in the SNOW", mentioned "SIERRA club" SIERRA being Spanish for "MOUNTAIN range" (SIERRA club also concerned with protecting NATURE, and TJK was a member), letter mentioning torture by shoving PINE needles under fingernails, Halloween card had eyes looking through a TREE, suspected of sending a taunting Christmas card to sister of probable victim Donna Lass with picture of PINE TREE covered with SNOW, and saying "Saint Donna, Guardian of the PINES." Another card mentioned Monticello (Italian for little MOUNTAIN), and "in the WOODS dies April".

Do people have other examples to add to this list? Or to disprove it?

This shows that the Zodiac Killer, Theodore Kaczynski and the Tylenol Killer all had a very similar criminal signature - the use of Nature themes, in particular Water, Mountains, Trees and Wood.

There is also significant new work on the Zodiac codes which strongly points to Kaczynski as being the Zodiac Killer. See:

I ran over this fairly thoroughly in my book, and also showed how Kaczynski used exactly the same motif in his correspondences. Moreover, there's a Wagnerian element in Kaczynski's writings that we don't see in Zodiac's, although that element is represented by opera, which mirrors Zodiac's use of the Mikado. But the woods, trees, snow, mountain, etc., motif doesn't appear in Zodiac's work until the precise period of time when Kaczynski left Lombard and headed out to Great Falls with the definite idea of building his own little cabin in the woods.

Yes, I got many of the examples from your excellent book. And Norse mythology is something both Zodiac and Kaczynski used. Wagner also used Norse characters and themes, and you showed how Kaczynski made references to Wagner as well. So both Zodiac and Kaczynski made references to Norse mythology, opera, poetry and literature. And of course the common interest in bombs and codes, and the many other factors we have already gone over.

It seems Zodiac first started with a theme related mostly to bodies of Water, but then expanded it to include more Trees and Wood. And you are right, at the time Kaczynski started looking for land and eventually buying land in Montana, Zodiac intensified his use of Mountain, Snow, Trees and Wood themes.

I think the Nature themes were used to signify his belief in the primacy of nature over technology, as a taunting clue to his Montana location and/or as a calling card link to get proper credit for his crimes.

He certainly did like to tease, didn't he? And in an intellectual sort of way, calculated to gratify his own vanity without actually revealing enough of himself to make things unsafe.

The original connection to Wagner's Ring Cycle originated with one of the early alt.fan.unabomber posters, a gentleman by the name of Ross Getman. I noticed the Parsifal allusions myself, while doing my chapter on literary allusion. Chastity was a big theme in Parsifal, and of course that's a subject that Ted would know something about!

As a note to TJK's wood, water, theme etc. I have visited 3 of his more favorite spots or at least possible crime areas. Lake Tahoe , Northern California and Lincoln MT. On my travels I couldn't help but notice how similar the areas were to each other. In terms of vegetation, wildlife and topography TJK would have had little trouble using his skills to live off the land in any of them. I've camped and or Backpacked in all three areas and in terms of navigation and survival little changes are needed. He had a certain comfort level that's obvious after being there. Undoubtedly he felt compelled to protect "his" backyard by any means necessary.

It's interesting how Ted's excessive use of the wood motif almost got him caught in September, 1995 -- a postal worker claimed she recognized him from the Unabomber sketch and then became even more suspicious when he listed his occupation on his passport application as "carpenter." The postal worker had previously attended a briefing on the Unabomber in which the wood motif was discussed, but her supervisors never acted upon the tip, according to her.

I have posted much on the TJK (and Zodiac and Tylenol Killer) obsession with nature themes, in particular WOOD. Tylenol was owned by Johnson & Johnson, founded by the three Johnson brothers, two of whom were James WOOD Johnson and Robert WOOD Johnson. Given the known TJK targeting of Percy WOOD and Leroy WOOD Bearnson, I have speculated about the possible connection.

Minor little tidbit I found slightly interesting, from a poster named "Morf13" on another board :

In addition, I also found a ship with ties to the San fran area.Guess what the name of the ship is..yep,it's called "ZODIAC". Heres a little history on the ship
"Originally designed by William Hand Jr. as an ocean racing yacht, the Schooner Zodiac was built with painstaking care in 1924 in East Boothbay, Maine. Robert Wood Johnson and J. Seward Johnson of the Johnson & Johnson family were her first owners. In 1931 the Zodiac was purchased by the San Francisco Bar Pilot Association and renamed California, beginning her long service as a bar pilot schooner. Her new responsibility was transporting harbor pilots to ships through shallow and dangerous waters off San Francisco's Golden Gate.
Retired in 1972, she was purchased by the Vessel Zodiac Corporation. Through the efforts of hundreds of dedicated volunteers, the vintage wooden schooner has been restored to her original beauty. In 1982, she earned a spot in the National Register of Historic places, and on her 60th birthday in 1984 was given back her maiden name."

This is the clearest picture I have seen of the man apparently watching flight attendant Paula Prince buy Cyanide filled Tylenol in Chicago, September 1982.

This does look so much clearer. In this view, I really don't think it looks like Ted...mainly due to the hairline. What do you think?

Ted was known to implement disguises. it would be easy for him to trim his hair, giving the effect of making him look older. If you look at this man from the forehead down, it does look very much like TJK, IMO, though I can't say for sure. But look at the general face structure, nose, beard, even the white spot on the beard.
